Much more than a house for tourist lodging

We are four brothers who want to protect and recover the heritage of our countrymen, giving back the value to a family house that has become less valuable but with a lot of potential.
The architectural design of the house was carried out by Ana Recuna and Iñaki Mendizábal. They helped us to turn a small house, since we started from the existing structure, into a house full of light, comfort and beauty.
The house is full of details, works of art and charming rooms that will make you feel at home.
The sculptor Cándido Caneiro, Lumeares (A Teixeira), created three specific works for O Souto da Aldea:
Sete caras, refers to the seven faces of the stone that the stonemasons call (seven positions);
Lombada, it alludes to the slopes of the Sil River through these lands;
Por-tal é…cal? relates the links, to the connections, to the links.
It is also part of Caneiro’s work Obxecto topado e transformado, a face on the back, one side facing the other.

The viewpoint of Souto da Aldea

The public road, next to the house, separates this one with the Viewpoint do Souto da Aldea. A space to enjoy a land that once was a vineyard. We can still find some vines, among them, our famous “alcabril”, and contemplate the Canón do Sil looking towards Val do Can. We can climb the pataos (terraces) and imagine the added difficulty that the steep terrain posed to the work in the fields, hence the name heroic viticulture. We will have to climb a few terraces to be able to contemplate the Sil river, the natural border of the provinces of Lugo and Ourense. The altitude will allow us to immerse ourselves in the Lugo’s foothills: the lands of Sober with the famous vineyards of Amandi, A Barca de Abaixo, the Sanctuary of Nosa Señora de Cadeiras where the sun sets for a few days in summer. On the Ourense side we will contemplate: Val do Can, Parada de Sil, Monte Meda and the parishes of Chandrexa and Sacardebois.

Minimum stay 2 nights

Our house is designed to enjoy short or long stays in the wonderful Ribeira Sacra. It has all the comforts to be able to enjoy a modern house surrounded by nature and, therefore, choosing only the sounds that this one offers us, since it is sufficiently far away from bars and shops so that our guests are the only tourists of the small village. The nearest places to eat or shop are: Cristosende at 5.6 km (11 minutes) only restaurant; Parada de Sil at 8.5 km (15 minutes); A Teixeira 7.3 km (14 minutes) and Castro Caldelas at 16 km (29 minutes).

O Souto da Aldea is located in the center of the Ribeira Sacra, in the middle of the Sil Canyon. A privileged location to visit both the Ourense and Lugosa sides, as can be seen in the location of our accommodation offered on the website of the Consortium of Tourism Ribeira Sacra. Extraordinary page with all the necessary information to be able to plan your trip in advance.

To get to the house, the regional road is winding and narrow, like all roads that try to preserve and protect the places they run through. For that reason, we recommend, if possible, to arrive during the day, since the sunlight will allow us to enjoy the impressive landscape, to know the beautiful valley where the house is located and to avoid the possible uncertainties that can provide those places that are unknown. Especially in areas, like ours, whose geological formation is so interesting.

The name

O Souto da Aldea is the name of the place where the house and its garden are built. That is why we decided that this should be the name it should bear.

Galicia is a country rich in toponymy. As Xesús Ferro Ruibal said:

“The man gives his name to all the realities with which he has a direct, intense and daily relationship. For that reason, the fact that in Galicia every irrigated land, every meadow, every road, every pine forest, every mountain, every spring has its name is a demonstration that the relationship between Galicians and nature is always very intense. And for that reason, each name is a document. Sometimes, a very old document”.

The toponymy, as he said, is a documentary treasure. There could not be a better reason for the choice. And especially when we know, thanks to the information received by Asesoramento Lingüístico da Secretaría Xeral de Política Lingüística, previous consultation made by them to the Seminario de Onomástica da Real Academia Galega, that in Galicia Nomeada only three identical microtoponyms are collected. O Souto da Aldea is found in Sarria (Lugo), in Celanova (Ourense) and in our village.
