The chestnut trees were used for both the tree and the fruit. The tree was used for wood and firewood and the chestnuts were used all year round, as they were dried in the dryers.
They were eaten with meat, fish, eggs, wine, milk, and they were also used to make stews with the addition of dried beans.
In the parish of Chandrexa they ground the chestnuts and made a flour that they used to make a kind of potato which they called “o po” (the powder).
In fact, the people of Chandrexa were called poeiros, a nickname they did not like at all because it was a bit derogatory.
